Over the last 18 months St Peters Salvos Stores has partnered with both Marrickville Council and The Department of Environment and Climate Change in a Sustainability Advantage program.

Monthly meetings take place to coordinate our set goals and objectives to ensure that we as a team are achieving desired outcomes. These meetings are overseen by a representative from Advitech PTY LTD. Advitech’s role is to ensure that we are committed to the program as well as adding value to what we believe are our desired goals.

Our key areas of sustainability are:

→ Carbon emissions from energy use

→ Recycling practices

→ Waste to landfill

→ Retrieving information

→ third party support and awareness.

The results are:

→ 254 tonnes (254,504 kilos) of store returns has been supplied to a third party who then sorts it and sends it on to 3rd world countries and what is rejected is used for rags.

→ 18% reduction over the previous 12 months.

→ 49 tonnes of metals have been recycled to scrap.

→ 32 tonnes of cardboard is recycled.

→ 165 tonnes of paper (books etc) has been recycled.

→ Approximately 1,000 milk crates have been returned to suppliers where previously they would have been destroyed or used in other areas.

→ Over 1,000 recycled mattresses have been sold which normally would have ended up as landfill. This is through all mattresses sold being sanitised prior to sale.

→ A review of all electrical appliances on site has resulted in a reduction in use and a review on all appliances that are deemed to be using excessive amounts of electricity.

→ Electricity use has been reduced by 15% through better practices including only using areas that are required at the relevant times.

→ All donated "non working electrical appliances" are stripped and recycled. This includes all E-waste.

→ Split system air-conditioning systems have been installed so only office areas in use are being used, not a whole air-con systems that cools/warms the whole building.
